It is the governmental center of county of Wagoner County. It became the first town/city incorporated in Indian Territory on January 4, 1896. The town of Wagoner began as a small improve at the intersection of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railway and the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (a branch of the Missouri Pacific Railway), when William Mc - Anally, a foreman for the MKT assembled a small hotel at this isolated locale in June 1887.

The town was titled for barns dispatcher Henry "Big Foot" Wagoner, who had reported the need for a barns switch close-by to accommodate the shipment of logs and hay.

The switch had been previously titled "Wagoner's Switch." District Court on January 4, 1896, making Wagoner the first town/city incorporated in Indian Territory. By statehood, the town/city had 2,950 inhabitants and was titled as the governmental center of county of Wagoner County. Highway improvements made Wagoner a bedroom improve for Tulsa and Muskogee. Wagoner is positioned at 35 57 20 N 95 22 41 W (35.955501, -95.377938). It is 18 miles (29 km) north of Muskogee, Oklahoma and 40 miles (64 km) east of Tulsa. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 7.0 square miles (18 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,669 citizens , 2,928 homeholds, and 2,111 families residing in the city.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $30,493, and the median income for a family was $35,426.

Wagoner has one newspaper, the Wagoner Tribune.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015, The Tulsa World announced that its parent business BH Media, a division of Berkshire Hathaway, the Omaha-based investment holding business led by billionaire Warren Buffett had purchased a several suburban newspapers, including the Wagoner Tribune. As noted on various city-sponsored highway signs outside the city, Wagoner is home to a number of notable persons, most indicative of the blend of Western and Southern culture that the town/city embodies.
