The Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway (later part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad), assembled a track through Fairview.

The town site was originally inside territorial Woods County, but became part of Major County, Oklahoma, upon its creation at statehood.

It was designated as the governmental center of county of Major County, which became permanent after an election December 22, 1908.

Fairview is positioned at 36 16 14 N 98 28 41 W. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 7.0 square miles (18 km2), of which 7.0 square miles (18 km2) is territory and 0.14% is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,733 citizens , 1,131 homeholds, and 762 families residing in the city.

There were 1,131 homeholds out of which 30.8% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families.
