Checotah claims to be the steer wrestling capital of the world. Early boosters called Checotah, "The Gem of the Prairie. Although it was titled Checote Switch for Samuel Checote, a later mapmaker spelled the name as Checotah.

Between 1907 and 1909, the citizens of Checotah were involved in a dispute with close-by Eufaula known as the Mc - Intosh County Seat War.

After Checotah was designated as the new county seat, the citizens of Eufaula refused to hand over the county records.

Eufaula was designated as the permanent seat of Mc - Intosh County one year later. Nearby is Eufaula Lake, the largest-capacity lake in the state of Oklahoma.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 9.0 sq mi (23 km2).

8.9 square miles (23 km2) of it is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (0.67%) is water.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 67.91% White, 6.92% African American, 15.91% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other competitions, and 8.53% from two or more competitions.

There were 1,389 homeholds out of which 31.5% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $22,029, and the median income for a family was $30,741.

About 16.1% of families and 20.4% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 23.4% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over.

American Idol Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood wrote a song on her album Some Hearts called "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore".
